NEW ULM, MN – June 4, 2013 – New Ulm Telecom, Inc. recently held its annual shareholders’ meeting in New Ulm on May 30, 2013. An election was held at this meeting electing James Jensen and Perry Meyer as directors.

Mr. Jensen has served as a Director since 1982 and as Chair of the Board since 1999. Mr. Jensen is President of Jensen Business, Inc., and is a published author and motivational speaker to businesses and other groups.

Mr. Meyer has served as a Director since 1995. Mr. Meyer oversees all operations of a diversified grain and livestock farm and is also President of Steamboat Pork.

“We are grateful for Mr. Jensen and Mr. Meyer’s continued contributions. Our board members are a great asset because of their strong leadership skills, extensive experience, and proven track records,” said Bill Otis, President and CEO, of NU-Telecom.

Other current board members include Paul Erick, Duane Lambrecht, Dennis Miller, Wesley Schultz and Suzanne Spellacy.

Telecommunications Technician – Redwood Falls

NU-Telecom has an exceptional opportunity for a Telecommunications Technician in our Redwood Falls location.

Primary responsibilities include establishing and maintaining communication services which meet the expectations and value of each customer. This person will represent the company in a one-on-one relationship with the purchaser of NU-Telecom’s products and services.

Job duties include:

Installation / service of business and residential video, internet, and voice services including VoIP and phone systems.
Service of copper and fiber optic underground and aerial cable, to include installation, troubleshooting, locating and repair.
Splicing of and installation of copper and fiber optic cable connection joint housings (pedestal, aerial punch, hand holes).
Remote maintenance.
On call duties.

Qualifications include:

2 year Telecommunication, Broadband, Computer, Electrical or related degree.
Desired experience includes electronic, basic wiring, customer relations, computer knowledge / training (auto CAD, Windows, etc) and awareness of NEC guidelines.
Valid Driver’s License.
Power Limited Technicians license (can be obtained after hire).

Scam Alert – Fake Antivirus Phone Scam Is Stealing Money And Identities

Many online scams start with an email but you also need to be cautious when the phone rings. There have been an increased number of reports recently of phone scammers claiming to be from Microsoft, or an antivirus company, or some random tech support facility. These callers will claim their systems have detected viruses and/or malware on your computer and they can help you with a lifetime of guaranteed support for just a one-time payment of $100 or so.

The process typically goes like this:

1. The scammers first want you to download a remote access service and grant them access to your PC.

2. Next the scammers want you to buy and install antivirus software that’s usually counterfeit or just a trial version that leaves you with non-functioning, useless protection. They may also recommend the latest Windows operating system, which is also likely to be counterfeit.

3. Because the scammers were given unfettered access to your PC through the remote access service, they may install a backdoor Trojan — a malicious application that enables them to steal your passwords, use your system and Internet connection to send spam, and more.

If you receive a call from someone saying your PC has been compromised, just hang up the phone. Reputable companies will not make unsolicited calls about the health of your computer.

Microsoft recommends these do’s and don’ts to help prevent becoming a victim:

Be suspicious of unsolicited calls related to a security problem, even if the caller claims to represent a respected company.
Use up-to-date versions of operating system and application software.
Make sure security updates are installed regularly.
Use strong passwords and change them regularly.
Make sure your firewall is turned on and that antivirus software is installed and up to date.

DON’T

Provide personal information, such as credit card or bank details, to an unsolicited caller.
Go to a website, type anything into a computer, install software, or follow any other instruction from someone who calls out of the blue.

This Month’s FAQ – How Can I Tell If My Email Account Has Been Hacked?

Question: A friend of mine recently mentioned that his email account had been hacked. How will I know if the same thing happens to me?

Answer: That’s a great question to ask since this is a common problem. Here are the signs that your email or social network account has been hacked:

Friends, family members, or colleagues report getting a strange email from you, perhaps one that touts a shady-sounding business venture.
There are posts you never made on your social network page. These posts often encourage your friends to click on a link or download an app.
Your information was lost via a data breach, malware infection, or lost/stolen device.

If you believe your account has been compromised, change the password to that account and other key accounts as soon as possible. Create a unique password for each account. Your passwords should be long and use a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

Should you be denied access to your account because a hacker changed the password, visit the Web service’s site immediately and follow the steps it has for recovering an account. For additional information or recommendations about online security in general, please contact us.

NU-Telecom’s Bill Otis Meets With Congressional Representatives

NEW ULM, MN – April 26, 2013 – Mr. Bill Otis from NU-Telecom met with the offices of Kline, Walz and Franken in Washington, D.C., this week to discuss the significant impact of small communications providers like NU-Telecom in delivering consumers affordable broadband services.

Mr. Otis spoke about the importance of broadband for rural business development and growth and also the ways that broadband brings education, public safety, telemedicine and other opportunities to rural consumers. He provided an overview of NU-Telecom’s service areas in the districts of Kline, Walz and Franken in MN and highlighted the types of service it provides to business and consumers in New Ulm, Hutchinson, Litchfield, Redwood Falls, Springfield, Glencoe, Sleepy Eye and Goodhue, as well as pointing to the number of jobs NU-Telecom provides in the state and other services that contribute to the area’s economic development.

Mr. Otis urged congressional delegates to help to continue to provide the services these communities need at an affordable rate by ensuring Universal Service Fund (USF) and intercarrier compensation reforms do not deter future broadband investment in rural America and penalize small businesses that have already invested. Mr. Otis explained that cuts to this important fund are putting existing investment in rural broadband at risk and discouraging future investment in new broadband-capable networks by small companies, which may lead to increased rates for telephone, broadband and other services.

Mr. Otis was in Washington to participate in the Legislative and Policy Conference hosted by NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association, April 22-24. More than 500 rural telecom representatives from all over the country gathered in the nation’s capital for educational briefings about emerging rules and regulations and other industry issues. They also took part in visits to the policymakers on Capitol Hill and the FCC.

NU-Telecom Working To Fix Long-Distance Call Completion Problems

NEW ULM, MN – May 9, 2013 – Mr. Bill Otis, NU-Telecom, is working with federal regulators to address a problem of long-distance telephone calls not completing to customers in the communities NU-Telecom serves or resulting in “dead air”.

Many telephone customers in rural communities all over the country have reported not receiving calls they should and experiencing poor quality when it came to the calls they did get. Frustrated consumers often blame their local telephone companies, but rural telecommunications companies are not at fault.

In a positive step for rural Americans and the telephone companies that serve them, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently announced that a national long-distance provider will pay a voluntary fine of almost $1 million as part of an investigation into the company’s efforts to route and complete calls to rural communities. Mr. Otis believes the fine sends an important message to other long-distance providers about the fundamental duties expected of telecommunications providers. But policymakers need to do more to put an end to the epidemic of call failures once and for all.

“The FCC’s recent announcement shows that regulators in Washington recognize the public safety concerns associated with calls continually failing to go through,” said Mr. Otis. “It also shows that local telecommunications providers like NU-Telecom are not to blame and that this problem is part of a much larger issue associated with our country’s telecommunications networks. That’s why we continue to work with the FCC and member of congress to find a solution.”

It is believed that most rural call completion problems stem from a practice called least-cost routing (LCR), in which long-distance carriers send calls destined for rural consumers to intermediate providers to reduce expenses. In many cases, they are not properly routing the call to its destination and, as a result, some calls have poor call quality and many calls are not connecting at all. This means rural consumers may be missing important phone calls, and they may not even know it.

Local telecommunications providers and their national trade associations have been leading efforts to find a solution to the call completion problem for more than two years. For more information, visit www.ntca.org.
