Voice Service
Q: I would like an 800#. Is there a charge for
this?
A: With New Ulm Long Distance, there is no monthly fee to have the 800#, however, each
time a call comes in on that 800# you will be billed the minute rate you are
subscribed to.
Q: I am running a business out of my home. Do I have to pay the business
line charge?
A: If you are listed in the phonebook as a business name, you will be
billed at the business line rate.
Q: Do Non-Profit organizations receive a discount on their phone service?
A: No. They may receive a discount on non-regulated service through such
as Internet service and web hosting services.
Q: Can I have the same number ring at my home and at my business?
A: No. Double ring service is no longer available due to 911 services.
Q: My business is located out of the New Ulm Exchange but I would like to
have a New Ulm number and have it forward to my business in another town. Is
this possible?
A: Yes. The fee is the same as if you had a regular business line, plus
the Call Forward fixed feature which is a small additional fee per month.
Q: I am not using one of my lines but may want to use it again at a later
time. What can I do?
A: You can put that line on "vacation". There is no monthly fee for that
service, however there is a fee to reconnect the line.
Q: Some people at our business are changing offices and want to keep the
same extensions. What do we need to do?
A: We will need to send a technician to make some changes. The hourly
rate will apply.
Q: I need a different phone number for my fax machine but I do not want
to have a separate line in my home/business. What are my options?
A: If your fax machine can be programmed with Custom Ring Service you can
subscribe to the service here for a small monthly fee. This will give you a
separate phone number for your fax, however, you will be using the same phone
line for each.
Q: What kind of taxes do we pay on our phone bills?
A: We have a city tax of .5% and a state tax of 6.5% and a federal tax of
3%.
New Ulm Long Distance
Q: Is there a charge to change long distance carriers?
A: Yes. There is a $5.50 charge to change carriers.
Q: Is there any minimum usage required with New Ulm Long Distance?
A: No.
Q: What different calling plans does NU-Telecom offer?
A: In New Ulm and Springfield, we offer a .15 cent per minute plan with no monthly charge or for
$4.95 per month we offer an .11 cent per minute charge. In Redwood Falls, we
offer an .11 cent per minute plan if you subscribe to video or internet. If you
subscribe to only voice, the rate is .15 cents per minute with no monthly
charge.
Q: How do I go about changing my long distance carrier?
A: Just let us know. If you are signing up with someone besides New Ulm
Long Distance or AT&T you will need to contact the carrier directly to get set
up with them. There will be a pic charge for changing the carriers.
Q: Do I need long distance?
A: You do not need a long distance carrier but if you do not there is an
automatic long distance blocking that is put on your line. If you want long
distance again, we will require a signature to remove the blocking and there
will be a charge to add the carrier back on.
Q: What is the advantage of going with New Ulm Long Distance?
A: We offer all of our billings on your local telephone bill. We have no
hidden charges with our billing. You pay for the long distance that you make and
tax.
Q: I had requested my long distance to be switched to a different carrier
and now you are billing me much more than I should be billed per minute. Why is
this?
A: Make sure that you have called the long distance carrier to sign up
for service. We only bill through AT&T and New Ulm Long Distance so if you are
getting billed from a carrier other than us or AT&T, the chances are that the
carrier was not notified that you would like to receive their plans. We can
re-rate your bill for you but you will need to contact the carrier and find out
how much you will be paying per minute with them.
Q: If I have a long distance block on my line can I still call 800#'s?
A: Yes.
Voice Mail
Q: Can I check my voicemail away from home?
A: Dial 233-0007 in New Ulm or 627-0007 in Redwood Falls to get into
Voice Mail when away from home. Or, call your home phone, press #, and when the
outgoing message begins, press the *key.
Q: I don't need a phone line, just a Voice Mail box. What are the charges
for this?
A: The monthly fees are the same as a regular phone line. You will pay
the line charge and the end of user fee as well as the Voice Mail charge.
Q: What are the benefits of Voice Mail?
A: With Voice Mail, your messages go directly on to your phone line. They
can be retrieved either from home or away from home. You can get phones that
have a message waiting light on them to show you have a message or a device that
shows there is a message there. If the electricity goes out, your Voice Mails
will remain if they are new or saved. Also, you can set your Voice Mail to pick
up when your phone is busy or if there is no answer.
Q: I have several phone lines that are rollover lines. Do I need to have
Voice Mail on each line if the others are busy and we can't get to the call
coming in?
A: Yes. At the present time we are working on a service called unified
messaging where are the Voice Mails can be left at one number.
Q: My business is moving out of town and I would like to have a recording
on my line indicating that my number has changed. Can I do this?

forward busy feature on the Voice Mail. As long as this feature is not activated
the Call Waiting will work.
Q: I have several phone lines and when one of the lines is busy I would
like it to forward to one of the other lines. What do I do?
A: This is called a Rollover Service. There is no charge to have Rollover
on your lines.
Call Forwarding

want to give my cell phone number out. Is there
any way to have the calls automatically go to my cell phone?
A: Yes. For a small monthly fee you can put either a Call Forward Fix on
your line to have all the calls to go to your cell phone or Call Forwarding so
you can choose when you want the calls forwarded.

Q: When we get our monthly bills, are we billed for the previous month?
A: NU-Telecom bills one month in advance. If you sign up in the middle of

you started until the end of the month and then for the upcoming month (current
month)
Q: Can I pay my phone bill with a credit card?
A: Yes, we take Visa, Discover and MasterCard.
Q: My bill this month is very large, can I pay part of it now and the
rest later?
A: You can, but we cannot promise that there will not be a late charge or
a disconnect notice. We have an option of putting you on payment arrangements
and during the time that you are on arrangements, you will have local and 911
phone service only and if you have our TV, you will still have basic service.
You are also responsible for paying your monthly local charges while the
payments are being made. When the bill is paid up to date, you may reconnect any
service but there may be a $15.00 charge to get your services hooked back up
and/or a $5.50 charge to get long distance back on your line.
Q: I live on a very fixed income. Is there any assistance I can get with
my bill?
A: There is a Minnesota Telephone Service Discount Application that we
have available in our office. If you qualify for any of them, you may be
eligible to receive $11.50 off your bill.
Inside Wire Maintenance
Q: Can I have Inside Wire Maintenance at my place of Business?
A: It is no longer available to businesses.
